Oktober/October

Oktober

Oktober ist, mein Freund, der Mond,
da alles stiller werde.
Nicht länger sich das Eilen lohnt,
zur Ruhe find’t die Erde.

Ein kühler Wind nun firbt den Wald
mit tausend bunten Tönen.
Der Gänse Ruf vom See her schallt,
dem Federvolk es wird zu kalt,
nach Süden treibt sein Sehnen.

Manch schöner Tag uns froh noch stimmt
durch matt’ren Glanz der Sonne.
Auf Stoppelfeldern es nun glimmt:
Kartoffelfeuerwonne.

Der Drachen in den Himmel stiebt,
string an Dich, ihn zu lenken,
und bindig ihn, wie’s Dir beliebt,
auch wenn Äol Dir Saures gibt,
wirst Du ihm doch nichts schenken!

October

October calls us in, my friend,
to rest beside the hearth;
our hurryings are at an end
and quiet fills the earth.

A thousand colours the cool breeze
upon the woods now brings;
the lake is honking with wild geese;
their feathery breed begins to freeze
and southward spreads its wings.

Many a fine day may brightly show
with meeker rays of sun.
On stubble fields bright ashes glow,
potatos roast thereon.

Your kite soars heavenwards; hold on tight,
try hard to steer its course
and tame the thing with all your might;
if Aeolus wants wrestling, fight,
we don’t yield to brute force!
